Searching for the Seventies: The DOCUMERICA Photography Project

March 15, 2018 - April 22, 2018
A young person with short, curly hair wears oversized sunglasses and a yellow t-shirt featuring a banana graphic. They stand in an indoor setting, with people blurred in the background, exuding a casual, retro vibe.

Images of everyday life in 1970s America: disco dancing and inflation, protests and bell-bottoms, gas shortages and suburban sprawl. In 1971, the newly established U.S. Environmental Protection Agency launched the DOCUMERICA Photography Project with the goal of documenting environmental troubles and triumphs across the country. Searching for the Seventies: The DOCUMERICA Photography Project is a collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and the National Archives and Records Administration.
